Sensory Sunday @ CMOO

Join us for Sensory Sunday, held on the last Sunday of every month from 9–10 AM. This special hour is designed for children and families who benefit from a quieter, less stimulating environment. With softer music, and limited weekend traffic, it’s the perfect time to explore the museum at a more relaxed pace.

Registration is limited, and we encourage families to call 315-216-6387 to reserve their spot.

Admission is free for one adult per paying child (1:1 ratio), and this program is free for CMOO members. We’re proud to offer this inclusive play opportunity to ensure every child can experience the joy of hands-on learning and discovery!

Creating Inclusive Spaces: The Importance of Quiet Hours for Neurodiverse Learners in Museums

Museums are dynamic, sensory-rich environments designed to inspire curiosity and learning. However, for many neurodiverse individuals—especially those with sensory processing differences—traditional museum settings can be overwhelming. The Children’s Museum of Oswego (CMOO) recognizes this challenge and proudly offers Sensory Sunday, a dedicated quieter time on the last Sunday of every month from 9–10 AM, to better support the needs of all children.

Research consistently emphasizes the need for inclusive spaces where all children can thrive. According to the Autism Society, sensory-friendly environments help reduce anxiety, improve communication, and enhance engagement for individuals with autism and other sensory sensitivities. Museums that offer sensory-friendly hours are not only meeting accessibility needs but are actively promoting equity in education and play.

A report from the Association of Children’s Museums supports this approach, noting that inclusive design—including sensory accommodations—benefits a broader audience and fosters a culture of belonging. Sensory-friendly hours provide neurodiverse learners with opportunities to explore at their own pace, without the stressors of crowds, loud noises, or bright lighting.

By offering quieter hours, museums like CMOO create welcoming environments where all children, regardless of sensory needs, can imagine, discover, and grow. Programs like Sensory Sunday encourage families to participate in community spaces they may otherwise avoid, creating lasting positive experiences and promoting lifelong learning.

At CMOO, we believe that every child deserves the chance to explore through play in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and celebrated.
